After Part II

It has been quite awhile since I had lunch at Sala Thai, a restaurant adjacent to River City. It offers the best cheese and asparagus omelets in Bangkok. It is right on the river so you can have a view with your meal.

Sunday, August 14, 2011 (Hungry Ghost Festival in Thailand)*

River City used to be teeming with shops and no customers. Now it is just teeming with no shops.

* In some Christian countries today is probably something like "Third Day of the Feast of Saint Cecil the Immaculate and the Pure"

PS: River City is trying to attract new customers by adding new restaurants on the ground floor.

Yesterday's Thai holiday explained.

The RC church near River City is both awesome and freaky-creepy. Unlike RC churches in America which are largely bland to boring, the interior of this Bangkok house of worship reeks of torment and fear. Note the primitive confessional that allows the priest to hear the "sinner" as well view his/her entrance and retreat. (Yes, the priest can be cooled by that fan in case he becomes too hot or excited while listening to and questioning the confessor.) Another fan is positioned behind the altar to keep the man cool while he performs the miracle of turning crackers into the meat* of doG's kid.

* The RC church is strong on this point: The Jesus meat that the parishioner is swallowing is not just 'tasty' carvings from around the rib ... no, he is choking down a bologna or salami version of the Kid: all the bits and pieces of his body. Should that put you off your breakfast!

What will it be? Thai or French?

Next month will be the 10th anniversary of Elephant Polo in Thailand. We were there for the first few years with the Screwless Tuskers team but we won't be there this year. But, a Bangkok newspaper remembers us.

Coincidentally, our Screwless Tuskers Captain, Golf, had dinner with Watcharee and I last night.
